That sounds freaking INTENSE man, is that to ensure your brain still works on the field?

Yeh it is tough to think under fatigue so we practice that sort of stuff... We occasionally do circuits where you are on the rower for a min then do a rules quiz for a min. 5 questions per quiz and a $1 fine for every wrong answer. Definitely keeps you on your toes.

Bula!!!

Have been in Fiji for the past week and a bit so haven't been able to post. Had the honour of refereeing two test matches between the Fiji Bati and the British Amateur Rugby League Association (BARLA). Great experience overall traveling around Fiji with both teams. Was a bit of a thrill to make the evening news in Fiji and even attend press conference. Definitely a big deal for the Fijians. Unfortunately diet over there was not great but did manage to squeeze in a few very short WOD's aside from the two games. In no particular order they were:

30-20-10 squats and pushups 2mins 54sec

30-20-10 squats and pushups 2 mins 42sec. Basically had no pull up bars in hotel room and limited access to gym so body weight exercises were there order of the day. Want to work pushups a bit as i used to dominate these but now they are a bit of a weakness.

1-1-1-1-1-1-1 Thruster 50-55-60-65-70(f)-70-70. Would have liked to crack 75kg as this would have been body weight but had to realy grind out the overhead portion of the 70's.

2x80min games. Both games were fairly quick and mentally tough. At the conclusion of both games i was failry well spent but think this was more due to concentration than physical exhaustion.

Also returned home to find that i will undergo strength testing next tuesday test will look as follows.

Team, you will be tested next tuesday at oakhill using the following protocol.

1)Bench Press(body weight-slow and controlled) -double the amount of reps you achieve to obtain a max score of 20.

2)Chins(wide grip-slow and controlled)-as above

3)Parallel bar dips(slow and full range of motion)
1pt per rep to achieve a max score of 20

4)Squats-as per 1 and 2

5)Push ups(slow and controlled)one set without stopping.
Divide your score by 4 to achieve a max score of 20.

You will receive a score out of 100 and your goal will be to strive for the 100.

So for a perfect score you need to bench bodyweight 10 times, do 10 strict wide grip chins, 20 p bar dips, 10 bodyweight (on the bar) squats& 80 push ups. I would be more confident with this if my push ups were stronger at the moment and as you can see there is a heavy emphasis on chest and triceps. There will not be adequate rest to recover after each excercise so fatigue will play a part on the pushups at the end. The bodyweight benching saps the local muscaluture a bit. Squats, chins and dips should all be fairly good. Will set myself a goal of between 85-100 and post results. I think when i retest this again in a month or so i will not be happy with anything less then 100. To assist in developing upper body strength and control i have decided to focus on rings for the month of July. Mix up supports, L sits, gtg on dips, and muscleups making sure they are worked into warmups.

That testing sounds intense Lawrence! Who knew being a ref required so much strength :|

Friday 3rd July 2009
21 Wall Bal
15 Chest to Bar Pullups
9 Burpees
Time- 8min 19sec
I like this WOD and was pumped that i was able to do first set of pullups unbroken as 15 pullups is what i have recorded as my max. This set was chest to bar and after a set of wall ball so am confident i would be able to push out a few more.

Saturday 4th July 2009
10 Thrusters
50 Double Unders
8 Thrusters
40 Double Unders
6 Thrusters
30 Double Unders
4 Thrusters
20 Double Unders
2 Thrusters
10 Double Unders

Time- 8mins 19secs

Prescribed weight was 60kg for thrusters. I scaled to 50kg which as i didn't want to do 40's but found 60's too heavy. Failed one rep in the set of 4 and had to repeat so was fairly happy with scaling. Double unders were OK but could be stronger. Arches of feet got hammered in this workout. Exactly the same time for todays WOD as last nights.

Monday 6th July 2009

2k Row on C2. Damper at 10 (because that is what we do at Ref's)
Time: 6min 56.8sec

Was very happy with this as I had not previously attempted a 2k row and had always had the goal of rowing a sub 7min. Average 500 split was 1:44.2 with the last 500 taking 1:46. Obviously still some room for improvement ... at least 2 secs if i can maintain the average pace through the last 500m.

Strength testing tomorrow so just finished with some skill work: squat snatches with bar, cleans with 50kg.

Tuesday 7th July 2009

Strength Testinf For Refereeing
Protocol was changed slightly on the night. Previously pushup score was divided by 4 but was adjusted to divide by 2 so that a max score of 20 would require only 40 pushups. This was good although they were very particular about speed of repetitions which had to be 2 secs down 2 secs up rather than at your own pace. Overall i was fairly satisfied with results with the eception of the bench. In november i was able to bench bodyweight 10 reps this time it was only 4 but with the 2 sec down 2 sec up requirement it was difficult to get the advantage of the stretch reflex at the bottom of the bench. That said i am sure that i am weaker on all presses than i was in novemeber as i have not done a lot of pressing lately. Full results were as follows:
10 strict wide grip pullups ...Score 20
4 Bodyweigth Bench (75kg)...Score 8
20 Dips...Score 20
10 Squats (75kg)...Score 20
40 Pushups...Score 20
Total Score 88/100

Also completed yo-yo beep test ( not the traditional beep more a speed based version)
Level 16.6

5 laps of agility course combined turning, sliding, speed ladders, and lateral direction changes.

10mins Swim recovery after testing.
