Crossfit / Saturated Fat / Salt

Postby Dan » Tue Aug 25, 2009 10:38 am

Hi all,
I am after some opinions, or links even (Adrian), on the above topics.
I eat a lot of nuts, not quite on the same level as Rob and his peanut butter, but its not unusual for me to go through 2-300gms of nuts a day.

What concerns me is that, on average, this is around 25-30 grams of saturated fat.

There is a lot more fat than this, and its all the "good fats" but the above is still of concern to me.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

Secondly, at around 350mg per 100gm in salt, is this bad or lowish levels.

Thats pretty much the only salt in my diet. There are lowish levels in milk etc, but thats the highest concentration.

My diet is typically,
Heaps of coffee.
Oats and almonds for brekky with a protein shake.
Snack of nuts and fruit mid morning.
Lunch Tuna or other meat and salad or veges
Afternoon snack same as morning or perhaps yoghurt - homemade, no fat, very low sugar.
Dinner similar to lunch
More yoghurt and trail mix for desert/snack and a protein shake again depending on my DOMS pain levels...

And the usual multi vitamin, and about 6 grams of fishoil.

With the nuts do you get natural raw nuts? They are the onlyk ones that I eat but i have no idea what salt content are in them. I do not eat peanut butter anymore but I have replaced it pumkin seeds, linseeds and sunflower seeds.
Give 100% or don't bother trying

For the amount I go through, I just eat the salted nuts from Aldis. Thats why I question the salt content.

Still looking for a decent seed mix place that I get similar quantities for the same price.

But I think seeds still carry similar levels of saturated fats.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the saturated fat - but I'd try get away from the salted nuts and go natural. However the sodium RDI that i saw when I googled it was 1500mg - so you'd be under there.

The low carb guys like Dr Mike Eades and Atkins believe that there's no issue with saturated fats, and that the issues are entirely with carbohydrates. The paleo guy - loren cordain - believes in less saturated fats because the paleo meats wouldnt have had as much fat on them compared with todays farmed meats - but as for saturated fat via nuts, thats paleo. Barry Sears talks about "toxic fats" at some point as well. So as usual the world is divided...

My personal opinion, after much reading, is that saturated fats are going to be better than pasta, bread and all that type of carbohydrate stuff...

The other thing I've read is your ratio of fats - dont go all one way.

Do you mean your ratio of saturated to unsturated or do you also mean omega 3 vs omega 6?

Yeah same question from me to, what is meant by ratio?
Say nuts are on average 50% fat, and about 7% saturated, leaving a good chunk of good fats.
But not omega3/6 fats I think, just the unsaturated variety.

My DI of salt would be definately under the RDI, but its still concerning. I should probably just shop around a bit better.

Ratios of omega 3's to 6's is apparently important (but I dont know what the ratios are...) I havent specifically heard ratios talked about in regards to saturated to unsaturated.. I'm not an expert by any means. So dont quote me!

For me - I get a reasonable amount of fat from both nuts, meat and eggs - with some saturated fat in the form of mayo as well.

Just been reading this - I'm struggling along with the saturated fat issue again. I think I'm eating too many nuts as well...

Yeah since embarking on this, I have become a big fan of saturated fat.
Like I said in another post, its not unusual to put away sometimes 300 grams of saturated fat in the form of coconut and nuts on a high intensity work day.
Love it, it tastes way better than sugar.
