Oils aint oils (Omega 3)

Postby Dan » Mon Dec 21, 2009 8:03 pm

So after listening to Rob Wolfs podcast over the last few days, I actually looked into the Omega 3 I have been taking.
I always read the nutrition label on food, but didnt for some reason with my omega 3 pills.
I have been taking Natures Own 1500mg.
Each pill has at best 450mg of omega 3. Leaving over a gram of crap.
So if I am trying to hit 6-9 grams a day, thats up to 20 pills a day - about $2.50 a day cost.

I have found ethical nutrients liquid fish oil.
http://ethicalnutrients.com.au/content/ ... d-fish-oil
About $40 retail for 170 mls
5 ml doses (3 a day to achieve 9 grams) will last me for 11 days - Just over $3 a day.

It has a funny taste, a combination of orange medicine taste and fish. Worth the extra price to not have to eat pills, and of course there is all the extra crap thrown in with the pills that I no longer eat....

Yeh i take the same Fish oil caps.. usually 3 a day which is probably not enough but better than nothing right... i also eat linseed (flax seed). These are pretty good for Omega-3... taste nice.... and you can buy them in packets whole or crushed. Some good info here:
http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=81#descr but not sure if they would take you up to 9gms... 6 maybe.

Let us know how much difference it makes. I'm not sure I have room for $120 a month for fish oil.. Is it 5g a day is it? Maybe I need to combo it with the linseed and a bit of coconut milk. There's Zone capsules which 1600mg per capsule. But I think you have to get them from the states...

Flaxseed is high in short chain O3 (Alpha lineolic) and we ideally want long chain 03 (EPA and DHA) and if you follow that link to nutritional profile here.
http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=nu ... le&dbid=57
You will see it has NO EPA/DHA. None.

Interestingly, feed that shit to chickens, and their liver turns it into EPA and DHA - thats how we get omega 3 enriched eggs.

Its tough, getting all this right, but its certainly interesting. Not sure on coconut, will look into.

Silver perch is nearly as high in Omega 3 as is Salmon. And a lot cheaper. And its a white flesh fish for those that dont like Salmon. Its also Australian and farmable.

I've started on the ethical nutrients fish oil today - 15ml to get 9g of omega 3's - I'm roughly doing it at .5g per 4.5kg of bodyweight - is this correct? I could probably go a little higher maybe

Dan - can you quantify the difference its made or is it too difficult to do that due to the overall adherence to the paleo diet?

Its hard to quantify, except when I miss my O3, or im out and just taking normal pills, I feel like shit.

My whole system works better when I take it.

Picked this stuff up for $30 a bottle in Parra yesterday, reducing the cost to $2.70 a day, better!

Would you pay 20 cents extra to not have to swallow 30 pills? (based on original pricing of standard capsules)

To not have 70% of those pills consist of filling agents of unknown type and quantity?
