What's with all the running events?

Postby Rob » Thu Aug 12, 2010 9:16 am

Running is generally a sport GENERALLY........ For older individuals who are broken from their other sporting endevours. Let's try to do some strong, powerful fast stuff!!!

Tommy when is the next strongman, powerlifting or a test of work capacity across MODAL domains. Not monostructural running running running

Sure enter all those runs but for f&@ks sake no body got off their arse to put a team together for Prestons at Never Quit 1st Birthday while I was away. Penrith had 9 teams!!!! 9 ! WE DONT HAVE ONE.

We have awesome athletes and our novice athletes are better than most other CrossFits intermediate ans advanced athletes.

I put the links up on the left of the main page for open days I know about.

17th October for the next CrossFit open day at Wollongong. Pull your fingers out and train for something that we do EVERYDAY.
Give 100% or don't bother trying

Next powerlifting competition is in December. There will be a raw division (meaning the only equipment used is belt, knees & wrist wraps). This way crossfitters can measure themselves against others without having to worry about equipment. Feel free to ask for more details about the comp.

There's a strongman comp on September 4th at St George PCYC. I won't be entering it but it looks like it is going to be a very well run event. Look up camden strongman on facebook for more details.

In my limited experience, Affiliate open days are often a chance to do a WOD in front of a crowd, meet a few new people and socialise. At the few I attended, I didn't ever really notice much inter-affiliate competition.

Rob, looks like you got the ball rolling with your post about Blackmores... Daz did you just grab all that event info from the coolrunning site? Runs are popular, held all over the place and held regularly.

Some people still seem to think that endurance is somehow an indicator of elite fitness.

Rob - when you lift at the PL meet in December I'm there for sure. Triumph weightlifting have a club comp on 11 September - if someone got in touch with them maybe they'd welcome a bit of outside competition. http://www.triumphweightlifting.com

Mark - open day/comps are a great way to get an extra bit of adrenaline pumping in a competitive environment. They are a great thing get along to.

Just a thought but with all the pullups you guys do, maybe a rock climbing competition would be a good idea as well. You could do a bouldering competition, where the height of the climbs is max 2.5-3m, and you climb without a rope (though there is plenty of thick padding on the ground).

I think bouldering comps require some skills and experience Tommy. I think we have the fitness for it though.

Any sport bar running is going to require some degree of skill and experience I think mate. There's a surprising amount of technique involved in strongman, as with being a good powerlifter. I imagine the same goes for most other sports though maybe you guys could form an oztag team?

unfortunatly im a shit runner and its no big secret that my legs are my weakness but they are getting better and my running is also not that im focusing on it, im trying to do my best with the limits of my shoulder and i would much rather be competeing in xfit comps than running thats for sure.
the furthest i have ever ran is 7km recently i would eventually like to work up to run a full marathon so i guess thats why i put up all the running events leading up to the blackmores marathon, it amazes me the talent of runners we have at the gym especially people like dan w and cam they blow me away with their ability its awsome.
i definatly agree with rob we have a good range of athletes and i would like to see more people stepping up and competing dont be scared its awsome fun and a great experience to test yourself against other boxes.

I have to disagree with that statement. Yes its easy for anyone to get out there and have a run - the same way its easy for someone to go to the gym and do a squat. When one begins to compete or train though I believe there are elements that require skill and experience.

Running is a skill, some people have it naturally, others don't. If you're not moving efficiently, and you do that through correct technique - its like trying to squat big weights without recruiting all the appropriate muscles you can. In a competition setting pacing and nutrition and strategy all come into play - as well as the actual technique of running. Running is a sport like any other.
